These are the faces of the men who commanded the 13th NJV., names I have known, but now there are images to give them more meaning.

1.-Capt. James L. Carmen, Commander of Company D.  2-Maj. Gen. George A. Beardsley, The man who was the original recruiting officer of Company D. At the time of the battle of Antietam, he was a Captain. 3-Robert L. Swords, led the march to Antietam. 4-2nd. Lt. William B. Littell, 5-1st. Lt. Charles H. Canfield, 6-1st. Lt. John R. Williams, 7-1st. Lt William Bucklish, 8-2nd. Lt. John P. Decker, 9-Adj.Thomas B. Smith, 10-Maj. David A. Ryerson, 11-Maj. John H. Arey 12-Company Surgeon, Dr, John Love 13-Dr. John H. Love in later life, was a founder of Mountainside Hospital in Montclair New Jersey. Died July 30 1897, after completing a successful operation on a woman. 14-Capt. James L. Carmen-This is a New York Brady Studio Photo.
